BAPE

​The name, A bathing ape (abbreviated to Bape), is derived from the inspiring anarchist sci-fi film ‘Planet of the apes’, and a popular Japanese saying “A bathing ape in lukewarm water”. This is a way of describing youth who live complacent, sheltered lives (Complex, 2012). Over time, the philosophy behind A bathing ape has become a humorous “tongue-in-cheek” name, as Bape’s target demographic are well-off youths (Underline streetwear, n.d.)
